I have made numerous PS2 backups using datawrite classic discs which have worked perfectly. however when I tried to backup a few videos (using DVDdecrypter and DVD2one writing at 1x speed from and HD image) they play fine on my standalone Sony DVD player and PS2 but freeze towards the end of the film on other players. Are DVD players quite selective of the discs they will and won't play?

    Hello
Yes DVD home players are very different. In Canada we have DVD players that are between $150 to $500 and players that are less than $100 ($50 cheapest I have seen). The diference is the DVD decoding of the mpg2 compression. The cheap players can not play DVD-R/+R at all, no matter what disc closed method used. You can only play clean hollywood pressed discs. But this what you get when you pay about $60 for a player (equal to around $30 US). I think some companies take WinDVD add it to a chip and call it a DVD player, You get what you pay for.
