Hey all, hopefully you can help me. I bought a TDK 440N +/- DVDRW burner over a year ago. I havn't been able to burn a DVD yet!

I've used Nero, CloneDVD and DVDSanta but they all encounter errors.

I have the latest firmware for the drive.

I have TDK DVD-R's and Maxell DVD-R's and they both have the same problem, so it isn't the mediums.

I always get a write error or illegal disc message.

I havn't tried to burn any other DVD's, just the same old DVD over and over.

I used DVDDecryptor and I get no errors while using it.

What could the problem be? I bought the drive brand new and it plays DVD's fine!

Below is a log file from the latest version of the Nero 6 Demo. PLEASE HELP!

Did you set the new DVD burner as 'master'?

hey scf_au, I set the jumpers in the back to master and slave for my DVD-RW and CD-RW drives. They were the exact opposite before becuase my CD-RW's on top and DVD-RW on bottom. I hope changing the DVD-RW to master works, it was slave.

As far as Nero and all the other programs my DVD-RW was detected and selected to use as the default drive.

I'd be a nice Christmas gift if I could get the burner working. I'm decrypting the same DVD again with DVD Decryptor. When that's done I'm gonna try to burn it again with the Nero 6 Demo. I'll write you back and let you know what's up.

Just wondering, why would the jumper setting in the back be causing a problem? I figured as long as they were set to master/slave or cable select everything would be good. Is there a reason why the DVD-RW would have to be the master drive?

Thanks for your help! I hope I get this solved!

Well, changing the jumpers didn't work. Is there anything else I could check out?

    Illegal disc

From what I read from your first log, Nero was able to prepare the data but was unable to write them to disc because it was trying to access the CDR, not the DVDRW. That's why you have the 'illegal disc' message. If you have changed the DVDRW to be master and the CDR to be the slave the second time, then maybe I was wrong. But still, can you try uninstall the cdr for the time being, leave the DVDRW as the master and only device, and see how it goes?
Also, after you only have the DVDRW installed, try run 'get system info', 'test drive' and 'disc info' in Nero to check whether everything is O.K.
Sorry I can't be of much help.
    Good luck!

Sorry about my previous post. From your second post, I read that Nero WAS trying to write data to the DVDRW. I'm not sure whether it has always been like that. Still, may be you can try the methods I suggested in the previous post?
BTW, try use RWs for tests.
    Again, good luck!

Hey man. Thanks for responding. I'm gonna try removing my CD-RW and then test if that was the problem. Someone mentioned awhile back about Nero not selecting the correct drive so maybe that's it! I also read something about DMA not being enabled on the drive but I checked that out in the Nero log and it's enabled so that isn't the problem.

I'll get back to you as soon I can! ;)

Everything appears to be normal as far as system info in Nero. I removed my CD-RW then rebooted and tried to burn the disc again. I still have same problems with only the DVD-RW connected. The DVD's are always written to a point (about four minutes worth) then the 'illegal disc' error occurs. This happens on Maxell and TDK mediums.

Could it be the DVD I'm trying to burn? If so then maybe DVD Decryptor is the culprit. I havn't tried to burn any other DVD's. I'm not sure what else I could do besides buy a new DVD Burner. The problem with that is the one I have is new! LOL.

Case closed, my DVD-RW is POS to say the least.

Thanks for helping me though, we did all we could do.

    Have a good holiday...

Here's the new log with just the DVD-RW connected, notice that the writing dies at the exact same point as before! Is it the DVD or a DVD Decryptor problem.

I just tried burning another DVD to see if was the DVD or DVD Decryptor causing the problem but that isn't it. I have a feeling TDK gave me a trash drive.

The only good news about that is now I can buy a duel layer DVD burner! LOL.

Don't give up yet. In Nero, try run 'get system info', 'test drive' (put one of your discs in the burner), and 'disc info' to see whether the hardware and software had been hooked up well.

    nps,

Would you do us all a favor and go back and edit (reduce) the size of your img's. You have disrupted the borders on this thread to the extent that those that might help, will not, because by not controlling the size of your screen shots you have made this thread almost indecipherable and, I for one, will not waste my time trying to decipher that which you have written.

There is an "edit" icon at the top right of each of your posts if you didn't know –

    Cheers,

    Pete

I'm not very familiar with Nero besides burning CD's. I looked for the 'get system info', 'test drive' and 'disc info' options but I can't find them. I have a DVD -R in the drive. What exactly do I have to do to use these options?

Thanks, I'll get back to you in the morning.

    Run NeroStartSmart, and highlight 'Extras'.

This is an update to my POS TDK 440N DVD drive. After all this BS of what could be wrong with it I found out what it was. The POS won't write DVD-R like it's supposed to, with any DVD software. You have to use DVD +R/RW if you want to write discs with this POS. Finally, after a year of BS I can write a DVD5 disc. This POS is getting trashed for Sony DRU-710A single-sided dual-layer writer so I can write DVD9 discs with no BS compressed video.

Cheers! For all your help guys!
