The media type u use dictates what speed u can write at, my guess is u r using 1x media.

U will need media capable of 4x to write at 4x.

    Hope this helps

Contact ur supplier, they should be able to give u the specs for the media.

Also, nero, or other burning software will detect what speed the media can be written at.

If u put the disc in with nero (i use this) and select a new compilation and look under the burn section it should display the rated speed of the burnable disc.

Did u mean bulkpack as I think that it is 1x only. not 100% sure though.

Also check the dvd-r media section in the forum, this may also help u out.

It should also say somewhere on the disc what speed it is. It will be indicated by 1x, 2x, 3x, etc.

ok here is a problem for ya, i have a 2 speed dvd writer on my laptop and i have 4x dvd-r but i can still only write at 1x which takes about an hour..

i have tried uninstalling the ide controllers and letting windows re-configure them, i have updated all the burning software and firmware for the dvd writer. i have played around with several settings, i have even formatted the hard drive and re-installed XP yet i still cannot get above 1x!!

any ideas? is this a hardware fault?? the dvd's write fine just take an hour to write 4.5gig. I have a toshiba P10 3ghz laptop, 512mb ram and 60gig hard drive!

    ???

Download DVDinfopro. It will tell you media speed, who made it, etc. Good little program.
Also jamin100, You didn't say if your burner is internal or external. If you added it external, check that you have the ASPI layer installed. Its missing in Windows Xp. If your burner is factory installed internal, it should be in there but you never know.

sorry, it is an internal drive on a toshiba laptop. the drive spec says it can write 2x but i can only seem to get it to work at 1x this takes about 60 to burn a movie which is 4.5gig! ?

ok, i have used dvdinfo to check the media and it says,

Available Write Descriptor CLV 1.0x 1350KBps

^^ this is what dvd decriptor is saying that i am burning at but dvdinfo also says:

    Write Strategy
    Speed 4.0x 5540KBps

so i guess this ^^ is what the media can do?

so how come i have a 2x dvd-r drive but can only write at 1x ?
