DVD reader stuck in PIO mode. How to get to DMA?

My Liteon LTD163 (16X read)DVD-ROM is set to PIO only in XP Pro even though I set it in secondary IDE channel Device Mgr setting to "DMA if possible". I think this is slowing down my ripping speed of DVD's when using DVDXCOPY (took 38 mins to rip one movie DVD (XXX)). My SONY DRU500A is on the same IDE channel and is DMA mode 2. How can I force the LiteOn to go to DMA mode?

    Hi,

WinXP is normally very good at setting DMA for ATAPI devices. The only case that it does not turn on DMA for your drive is when the controller or/and the drive is not supporting DMA.
I know your liteOn drive and it can support DMA. It might be your MB controller does not support DMA mode for ATAPI devices.
Here is how to double check. Slave the dvd drive to the HDD on the first IDE controller. If WindowsXP switches the dvd drive to DMA enable then you know it the controller problem. Other than that, the drive is defective.

After 6 or 8 errors XP turns off DMA mode, you cannot turn it back on without reinstalling the ide controller.

Go to the system properties and uninstall it then reboot at which point it will reinstall itself and you can enable DMA mode
