Today i bought catch me if you can dvd i used dvd shrink to back it up and i was well impressed with it

the movie is very large over 8 gb

i compressed the menus using compression level 4 and use still pics on the extras as there isnt any, also took out the subs and kusic channls i wont need.

on the film i used compression level 7, i thought this might be to high as it took the film from 7 or so gb to just under 4.

i have just watched the film back on my ps2 to check that it burned ok.

and i didnt notice any difference from the orig copy

i have read some of the details about dvd shrink and know it doesnt completely re-encode the entire film just parts could any help and let me know what it does actucaly take out of the film cause level 7 compression is the highest i have used so far and i didnt expect results as good as that

i have learned so much from u guys and thanx again : )

Thanks RonnieDar for saying what you did with catch me if you can. Its the largest movie i have tried to backup and thought id give it a miss when i saw how much it had to be compressed. I will give it a go now, im still very new at doing this and will be be interested how it turns out..

I find DVD Shrink a very good program. For movies of that size i suggest you remove the extras, sound you dont need, meus and even the start and end credits. If you are unsure of how to do this go to my DVD Shrink Guide at:

The DVD Shrink Guide rocks. I already have ripped a couple DVDs to my hard drive. You recommend using Record Now Max to burn these files to DVD-R. Are there any alternative free applications that can be used instead?

If you want to shrink the movie only and leave out all the extras just click on re-author and then drag the main movie file over to the left - you can preview what you've got in the preview box. Then select the compression level. That's the simplest way to get the minimum amount of compression for the movie only. You can still select extras such as subtitles and audio tracks. I've just done 'Gangs of New York' that way and the result with a 30% compression is superb. This is a very stable programme.

I was just wondering why you would use a higher compression level on the MAIN movie than what you used on menus?

I mean to each his own but I would put menus at level 10 before touching the movie and then only then would I go that high on the main movie.

The only reason i used a a differnet level for the menus is after compressing the movie to level 7 i think it was left quite a lot of space on the disc, so why not fill it up a bit more with not using a higher compression on the menus

if i would have used level 6 or 5 even putting the menus and extras at still pics it would still not fit

    see what i mean

DVD2One 1.2 gave me great (nay, amazing) results as to video quality on 'Gangs of New York'. Which with Movie-Only was still 7.2 Gb or so
I am impressed w/ DVD Shrink 2.3 and it's compression but audio seems slightly buggy still (plus this mysterious 'cyclic redundancy errors')...I will test new DVD Shrink app's as & when they come out : )

    hi all,

hey herbsman hi, ok i have done not many films as i have been on experiment on jungle book 2

Spiderman = full film main movie compression 5 all esle extras/menus compression 10

also cut ends credits off main movie! to get under 4.36 gig.

i have been working on jungle book 2 NTSC converting to PAL, its took me 2 days of not knowing how to work new software and trial and error! i mean i ripped it with shrink and on standalones its fine as mine converts it to play anyway! but on playstation2 it plays black and white, so i thoguht i would give it ago on converting to pal which worked! its alot of work i know now but its all been a learning curve and my daughter can watch it on her bedroom ps2 now, very nice!

I learnt alot by this! its like what i found good was if i just have VOBs i can link them to run with ifoedit! and all the diffrent file formats going from NTSC to PAL to get it is good too as i know how to work them and the programs needed!

I really need to do more to clarify in my own head better, and also i used low quality settings where i could to speed things up so i know now it works ok, i can improve the film alot!

as on the ps2 sound is great! picture judders slightly (bitrate i think - used low!) and on pc movie is excellant and sound is quiet!

just got blade II and lord of the rings aswell!

also found out TMPGenc (one of them as i got 3 versions!) dont like XP

and ifoedit has bugs you click one button say 3 times and you get 3 different situations? or it dont like xp?

But you can right click on the .EXE and run it in compatibility mode to win98 or win2000 whatever...

    Thx all........

IFOedit hasn't been updated since [bold]Derrow [/bold] (creator of IFOedit) joined the 321 team to help make DVDxCopy a better program..so it's bound to have bugs !;-)

TMPGEnc DVD Author looks to do what DVD Architect does for me (mpeg to vob) but it also has them NTSC to PAL conversion capabilities.
I have recently d/l TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.0.10.36 & have yet to test it properly but I will report findings especially if favourable

    hi

oh, so this derrow guy has jioned 321! thats a shame, but is there another program herbsman that can create all ifos needed from vobs?

yes i used TMPGEnc DVD Author seems ok but not sure on all settings stuff yet? i was sort of firing along in the dark all the time, need more practice with all the proggys really!

and yes let me know how you get on with it and if you find anymore easy to use programs let me know!

Thx, herbsman you have helped alot in the past!

    Cheers....

    Hi there shrink fans!
Have been using 321 studios software for a while now and thought I'de give this free software a try. Absolutely brilliant stuff. I was having problems with dvdxpress freezing 3/4 of the was through the movie, not major but very annoying. Used dvd shrink to compress and recordnow max to burn and have'nt had one fail yet. congratulations, you're the MAN!

I've been backing up my Region 2, PAL DVDs with DVDdecrypter as DVDShrink is unable to read them. So, my sequence is DVDdecrypter, DVD Shrink to re-author and Record Now Max to burn. No problmes at all.

My question is this: I want to take two episodes from "Porridge" and two episodes from "Open All Hours" and put the 4 episodes on a DVD. How do I do this? Thanks.

    hi all

    @ gkrshnn

takes all vobs then rename starting from the last vob name of first set so all run in order from

    VTS_01 say to VTS_12

then run ifoedit and click the button CREATE IFO, it should make all files then burn!

if you want menus use TMPGEnc DVD Author! I THINK????

    Thx...
