I put couple of avi films on DVD but when I go to play the DVD it always stops about 5 minutes before the end.
Here's what I'm doing (each film is 2 avi files):
    1) I use an audio decompressor on both files (to ensure video and audio are in synch in virtualdub)
    2) I join the files in Virtualdub.
    3) I use TMPG to convert to Mpeg2
    4) I then use TMPG DVD author
    5) Finally I burn the dvd using clone dvd

I'm using 4x speed Datawrite DVD-R's on a Pioneer A06. Could it be a media issue because I can't see what I'm doing wrong??

Lower the output size of the intended DVD file size. Insteat of 4400MB for example, lower it to 4350MB. You may be overburning without success to your DVD.
