Yes, you can buy DVD+R DL media. It is still rather pricy though. DVD+R DL media will only burn in drives desgined for DVD+R DL media.

I would recommend these sites for purchase:

    Verbatim 3-pack of DVD+R DL - $34.00
    www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=17-130-954&depa=0

    Sony External DVD+R DL burner - $184.56
    www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10369328&loc=101&sp=1

Yes, it means more space. A dvd can hold 4.7 gb worth of data per layer. DVD+R DL discs have two layers and can hold 8.5 gb worth of data.

So far it's not possible to back-up 1:1 dvd 9 games won't boot.
It is possible to rip dvd 9 to 2 dvd5 and then you won't lose data

There aren't too many dvd9 games out. Each one is different.

Metal Gear Solid: Substance was split into two dvds. One for the regular game, and one for the skateboarding part.

The Guy Game was ripped to a dvd 5. That game has a lot of videos in it. The quality of some of the videos was reduced so the game could fit onto a dvd 5.

Another thing to do is to rip out the videos and replace them with dummy files in order to reduce the file size. Each game is different.
