My DVDR04 is starting to act up. Now when we try to play movies in it, at random points it pause for random amounts of time. Up to a minute or two, before it starts were it leaves off. Took over 3 hours to watch a 2 hour movie last night.

You might try cleaning the drive and its laser. But I have not found this very effective, unless the unit has been subjected to a un-clean environment
By the post I gather the programs are ones on a commercial disk. – Are they?
If the problem exists on burned disks. Were they burned on this recorder, another or both?
    How old is the unit?
The age of the unit could be a factor but not necessarily
Considering the described problem, You could very well be facing a DVD drive replacement

    Please note the following:

    1. If you haven't perform a firmware upgrade, please do so. Please follow

    2. Ensure that you are following the recommended media (blank DVD) list.
    http://www.ilohelp.com/faqs.htm (answer 12)

    3. Use a comercially available DVD lens cleaner using the manufacturers
    directions.

    4. If these do not work, try to default the system under the set
up>system>default. This will reset the unit to factory settings.
