Its a bad idea to play DVD movies anyway its hard on the laser and will weaken it alot quicker.

Not true morg1, sony designed the ps2 to allow playback of dvd movies and backup movies. They dont strain the laser or wear it down man. Who told you that?

its not that they strain the laser it's because dvd movies are a constant spin they never stop during play, yet when games run they start get the info they need then stop spinning so its just harder on the motor but still harder on the ps2

You would think that with a multi-million dollar design, they could get it right so that there wouldn't have to be so many different versions floating around.
BTW, I have a V4 that plays all dvd media quite well as long as they're clean.

    @ babymmm
Ps2 games do not stop spining mate, the laser is always reading data from the disc just like a dvd movie..

    @ morg1
An unmodified Ps2 will play backup movies "without" wearing down the laser..
Mine's like 4 years old and it still plays dvdr movies perfectly =)

If your Ps2 is modded, the laser is being forced to read Ps2 backups therefore the life of the laser is chopped in half... ie your gonna have problems with movies AND games later on..any modchip installer will tell you that (yea right).

    @ Willmatic
Sure there are quite a few different versions out there, newer versions have dvd+rw support and better playback than older models.
Overall Sony did a great job on the Ps2 =)

Yes like I said above, games and movies constantly read from the disc.

For dvd games I dont think the games speed up too much.
I know cd games speed up fast at loading screens.
They really burn the ps2 drive with this weird "Reving" noise.
But the ps2 has been designed to handle the speeds without wearing out the laser.
