what is the proper name for a vcr like device that records to a hard drive like a desktop, with or without a recordable optical drive, preferably without one, including a/v ins and outs of the rca type. composite. my set top box records directly from the cable input, but no external a/v ins or outs. although there is a coaxial in and out. coax in is used and hmidi(?) out to tv. I need a similar device to record to a hhd that I can write and overwrite to from external sources. I tried a capture device to my desktop but it did not work. since older desktops do not include built it video in port I need an standalone box. I just do not know what I am looking for.
