You'll need...
Smartripper 4.1 ~ (unpacks the DVD into it's consitituent AOB files)
DVD2AVI 1.76 ~ This takes the AOB files and squeezes them into two files - one file is the images, the other is an audio file.
TMPGEnc ~ this does the good stuff; it'll take your 2 DVDAVI files and crush 'em together into an MPEG but it will also allow you to splice the master MPEG into lots of mini MPEGS (so that you can put it onto CD-R's or split it back into chapters and create menu's!)
First get this article and read it slowly 3 times...

http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2vcd_with_smart_dvd2avi_tmpgenc.cfm

Then get this one...
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/nero_videocd_guide.cfm
Get Smartripper from the right-hand menu. As for the other 2 bits of software, you've got em I presume.
I can now produce VCD's with excellent audio & image quality; the only difference is the burn speed issue...anymore than 4x speed and the standalone players lock up. Incidentally, have you made you standalone DVD player region-free yet? Nope? Go to www.regionfreedvd.net!

Sound like allot of work to me. Just load up dvd::rip and transcode and hit the rip title button. Then encode with your choice of codecs. quality is great and I have never had a sync problem like so many windoze rippers/encoders.

OkaY, But can you give me a good encoder program? What do i need? the VOB files?

Transcode is the encoder, dvd::rip is the interface for transcode.

Here we go again...never heard of the other guys software 'cus I followed the AfterDawn articles and hey presto, every DVD I ripped (35+) have been successful with...
Smartripper 4.1
DVD2AVI 1.76
TMPGEnc 2.4?
+ Ahead Nero to make the menus/burn the CD.
Like I said B4, I have never tried binding subtitles cus' being English, I ve never needed to! But I will play on Thursday...
As for what you you need to get...you be the judge. If the other replies have been more helpful than mine, follow their advice. If however you think I sound like a man who's done this before and given you detailed advice, I guess my argument is stronger!

Sorry I wasn't more specific Frezko. I rip and encode in Linux. The program I use has an option for me to choose the audio track and subtitle language that I want to use(provided the dvd has subtitling). The program is dvd::rip and uses transcode as its encode engine. Hope that clears thing up a bit.

Using Vidomi is by FAR the more easier route, and produces the SAME video quality as compared to the SmartRipper+DVD2AVI+TMPEng route. All you need when using Vidomi is a dvd ripper (SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter) and DivX 5.03.

Rip& encode a short moovie using DivX 5.03. If you encounter audio sync playback problems, then switch to MPEG4 DivX 3.11alpha.

I use 4 programs to do this process because I dont have a dvd burner i use cdrs here is what I use
Smartripper 2.41 to rip the dvd to HD Direct stream copy
Flask Mpeg v 0.594 to convert and compress down to avi with divx 5.0 codec
Virtual Dub 1.4.13 to key frame split the file for 2 disc
TMPgencfree to convert to mpeg VCD and nero burning rom to put them to disc I made a small tutorial on my process and posted it to my site at http://www.angelfire.com/in4/sigscreamer/dvd.html

lasiter,
WAY TOO much transcoding m8, your losing video quality. The easiest way is to rip the dvd to your hd, then use TMPEnc to convert to VCD.
Use this guide on how to backup dvd2vcd (using TMPEnc).
