if i am low on hd space and would burn an avi to a cd-rw, could i then encode it to vcd from the disc? is this possible?

so then i could erase the rw and burn the encoded vids to cd's and do it over again and do this to all my avi so i could watch on a tv and clear up hd space

    am i making sense?

Yes and you are making sense. Just burn the avi to a CD and you can delete it from the PC. When you are ready, use something like TMPGEnc to encode the file as a VCD by pointing the software at the CD rather than the hard drive and that's it.

Obviously, once you have the file back on the PC in VCD format you can erase the CD and record the new file back over it.

Provided your standalone supports the VCD format and plays CDR/RWs you will then be able to play this on your TV.
