Hi- whilst searching for an answer to my hardware difficulty I found a post on here with the same problem.
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/115026

Now I have solved my problem and want to tell this person how to solve theirs, but I am a newly registered user and the post is slightly too old for me to be able to reply to it.

Please could a more experienced member copy and paste the following into a reply to that thread (above).

"You need to load AR Max Evo disk and go into Max Memory Manager. At the screen when you select your primary device choose your memory card and press SQUARE to format it. The card should be ok now.
Now copy back your saves from your USB drive one by one, but don't use the 'copy' function, use the 'uncrush to MC1' option.
    Your saves should be saved!
(in future don't use the 'Move' or 'Delete' option in Max Memory Manager, as apparantly they contain bugs. Just use the delete option in the PS2 Browser."

Thanks to anyone who will move this.
This thread can be deleted after it is done.
