the recording time you see on the packaging of blank disk is a guideline for devices such as dvd recorders that are hooked to your tv and record the programming. when using those discs on a PC you are limited by the volume of the disc and not the time quota.

I have 1 more question that may be pretty rookieish, but why do some DVD's take longer to go through the ripping / transfering cycle. This is compareed to others that dont seem to have anymore content than the first. Example. Breaking all the rules 4 plus hrs to burn. Flight of the Phoenix 1.5 hrs.
