Howdy lads, I have a Samsung External hard drive that my laptop is no longer recognizing. The laptop asks me if I want to reformat the hard drive. What exactly will happen if I attempt this will I lose all the data on the hard drive? Any fixes for this? I'm not a technophob but rather uninformed on this scenario. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plug it into another PC and if it isn't recognized, download and burn a Linux boot disk.
Wait until it loads the Linux desktop and plug the drive into a USB 2 port.
If it sees the drive click on it and see if any files are visible.
