    Hi guys,
soo I have this problem, I have my original Fat PS3 with a 200 GB HDD with a lot of music, movies, and pictures. Ive kept this HDD for a long time without re-partitioning it. Only problem is that my Fat PS3 is dead or wont turn on. Im not sure what the problem is as to why it wont turn on but I do remember it getting the infamous "yellow light of death". The Fat PS3 was the original 60GB PS3.

Recently there has been a new application made in which it allows you to connect a PS3 HDD to PC and read the drive and copy/delete data, etc. I've downloaded the PS3 HDD to PC reader application but I need the eid_root_key, which I cant extract due to the Fat PS3 being dead. Is there any way that I can extract the data of the HDD without this application or without the eid_root_key? Can I use psuedo eid_root_key or is there any other way to to get it without the PS3?

I was reading something about using Linux to decrypt the HDD at which point you can mount and extract the data off of the HDD. But Im not to educated using Linux. And Im not sure if it is possible.
If it is possible to use Linux to get the data off the HDD, could someone help me or point me in the direction of a good guide?

Since I am a new user I cannot post the link to the Linux guide about mounting a PS3 HDD to PC and decrypting it without the "eid_root_key", using Linux. I will send a link to anyone who knows more about this topic and is willing to help me

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sorry, but it's not possible. I have found some methods for decrypting the harddrive itself, but the content stayed encrypted. The easiest way to receive your data would be to use a temporary fix on your YLOD console, for example the hair dryer trick:

You can get the stuff you want off your harddrive or even copy the complete harddrive to another PS3.

So even if you can decrypt the HDD, is it not possible to copy all the encrypted data?

a quick search turned up so not so good news, the data even if retrieved can only be read by the ps3 it was on,the only way for you to UN-encrypt is to get the stuffed ps3 going & use the transfer utility,it is possible to create an image of the hdd by using a cloning software,if doing it from windows you'll need to make it sector by sector.Parted magic may tell you what format the ps3 drive is,however Eisherz has stated reading the hdd is one thing getting at the data is another,on the upside your now a littler wiser & will no doubt make backups of whatever data you can't afford to loose, this includes data on a pc
