It would appear that my Disc 1 of Final Fantasy VII for the PC has gone bad. There is a chip in the data surface that is preventing me from making backup. I was wondering if anybody here knows where I might be able to download a replacement image of it instead of paying Eidos $15 for replacement media?

You might be able to download it from a torrent. Have a look at www.suprnova.org

Thanks for the tip but they charge. I'd rather give $15 to Eidos than supernova.

I have just gone there to download something and they are not charging me. Are you sure you went to www.suprnova.org and not .com/.net because those are scammers and full of virus's.

Yep, they charge for access. Just a matter of principal but I don't pay for free/pirated stuff.

They charge a 1-time membership fee for new members.

Thanks, found it there although it appears that nobody's seeding it at the moment and it's all 4 discs archived together. Looks like it's going to be a while.
