I have a virus and have worked hard to get rid of if but the only option is to format my laotop.
If I format my laptop to a factory settings will erase all my email or just my documents and programs.
    I appreciate any feed back.

My advice forget about repair which will save all data with the risk of getting reinfected, instead manually save your email folder & any data & do a destructive reformat, however this time install easeus todo backup & add some of your most used apps, preferably nothing too large then create an image file (note i say image file not clone) as all you want is a backup of the contents of C not a sector by sector clone, also add ultradefrag set it for boot time scan (its very small & better than windows defrag)

2nd step go get first batch of updates then create another image

3rd get last of updates create another image

4 finish installing all apps you can restart after installing 3 or more so ultra can do it's thing & create final image

these images take the place of your reinstall disc as you now have a working OS as backup, now set easeus to do a weekly image you can also set up a schedule to do a daily file data backup of selected folders,be sure to save the already 4 saved images above to another drive, you will also need to read the tut of easeus carefully as it can & does erase the last backup if your not careful

to make image file smaller disable hybernation & set pagefile to none

edit: you could actually create an image of the infected drive & access it thru easeus explorer or attempt to remove virus with a linux live cd like hirens boot cd or such like

Thanx for your feed back but I am not a tech, so I do not know some or your terminology like image instead of clone or ultradefragm, boot time scan etc.
The reason I post questions is because I do not know, so I will need someone with patience that can explain to me with basic simple language, and I will appreciated.
My question about if the e-mail received and my e-mail contacts will be erase if I format my laptop to a factory stage is still unexplained.
My e-mail is very important to me so please does any one can answer that question?
You said to save e-mail folders but I am sorry about my ignorance, I do not know what does it means, is to save the massages?
    Thank you very much.

I've formatted my computer many times and never lost my e-mail.I lost any programs or software that I had before and had to re-install after formatting. I just log in with my user name and password to retrieve my e-mail.I don't think you will lose it in my opinion.

@JST1946:-Your email client is set to leave a copy on the server that is why you can retrieve them that is not the case with all email clients, his contacts in i assume outlook will be lost as well as emails, regardless the hidden email folder can be saved as can contacts

    @halvear
you'll have to web search on how to save your current emails & contacts,by rights the contacts can be exported depending on your email client, personally if i were you i'd switch to an online based emailing system like yahoo mail or perhaps gmail, you'll have to look into that if you want to take that route later

i haven't got time to walk you through it all & there's no need for me to do so as all your questions have been answered if you web search,as for using ultradefrag it's a free app with instructions same goes for easeus todo backup, tho these last two aren't necessary however without an imaging software installed,it will mean 4 days to reinstall everything vs less than two hours to have your comp backup & running, choice is yours, welcome to the real world of computers your crash coarse begins now..lol..
