I want to reinstall Vista Ultimate on a freshly formatted SATA drive. The problem is, for some reason, my Vista disk does not recognize my SATA and gives me nothing but a black screen whenever I try to use it. I am wondering if I can use my XP disk to format the SATA and then try installing Vista once XP is done formatting it for me...

Try it there is no harm in trying u need to make it recognize it. Does it recognize the drive in your bios. You may need to make sure its seen in bios first.
