I bought DVD-R 4X TAIYO YUDEN SILVER LACQUER 100 pc BULK PACK from www.blankmedia.ca. I am quite happy with this because it only cost me 70 dollars. This is an excellent price, less than a dollar for such good quality. However, i noticed something. You tell me if u see something wierd with these 4x disks.

    Media Code Mfr: TYG02
    Formatted Size: Not Formatted
    Total Size: 4.38GB(4.71GB)
    Book Type: DVD-R
    Media Type: 0
    Media Code Id: 8.0x 11080KBps
Write Strategy Speed: 12.0x 16620 KBps
    Current Drive Speed: 0
    Default Rotation: 0
    Linear Density: 0
    Layers: 1

First off, it has the media code for 8x disk as well as the rest of the disk is also 8x. Compare this to the actual 8x disks

    Media Code Mfr: TYG02
    Formatted Size: Not Formatted
    Total Size: 4.38GB(4.71GB)
    Book Type: DVD-R
    Media Type: DVD-R
    Media Code Id: 8.0x 11080KBps
Write Strategy Speed: 12.0x 16620 KBps
    Current Drive Speed: 8.0x 11080KBps
    Default Rotation: 0
    Linear Density: 0
    Layers: 1

Flawless, except for this.. which confuses me since i do'nt know what it means:

Current Drive Speed: 0 < supposed 4x media
    Current Drive Speed: 8.0x 11080KBps < 8x media

I am getting the 8x disks, aren't i. I looked this up and all 4x dvd-r's are yuden001 or TYG01. I am noobie so i was wondering if this information is correct :D

u should have gone here supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-r-media.html
    or maybe here /meritline.com/taiyo-yuden-8x-dvd-r-silver-thermal.html
for that price you could have picked up 150 of them at a great web site

If you're in the US, then meritline is the cheapest place to get TY's. I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but my experience with these disks is that they are capable of being burned at higher speeds than what is listed on the package. DVD Decrypter shows my 8x +r's writable at 16x, and my 8x -r'r at 12x. I assume the 4x disks would also be able to be written at speeds faster than what they are officially capable of.

DVDD shows the media id of my 8x -r as TYG02
DVDD shows the media id of my 8x +r as YUDEN000-T02-00

I am in Canada and just received my order from blankmedia
and I got 50 Taiyo Yuden blanks for $40.00 and the media
code is YUDEN000-T02. They are rated at 8x but I just
burned 2 of them at 12 times with no problem at all. You
just can't get better quality than TY blanks. These are
again rated at 8x and they are DVD+R silvertop. Zeide.

For anyone like me living in Canada ordering outside of Canada makes no sense money wise. The exchange rate, shipping and handling, duty and taxes makes it not worth it money wise. Your best to find an e-retailer in Canada and order from them.

If your concered, contact the people at blankmedia.ca I have contacted them when I had trouble with the Ritek inkjet printables I ordered which my burner didnt seem to like. They were responsive quickly.

    i just ordered the 100 pack 4xTY's from blankmedia.ca

cheap for us canadians. $70(like $50 U.S.) and shipping is super cheap. I should get them by friday. blankmedia is really professional. They reply to your emails within 10 minutes, they have canada post send you an automated message with tracking info of where your package is at a specific time etc. The best site to order from if you are in canada.

Yeah i completely agree. I live in vancouver, Canada so ordering in the states is a waste of money; however, i was wodnering if these 4x disks were actualyl 8x disks. 4x disks = TYG01 while TYG02 = 8x disks and that is the media code for these ones. Is this information correct or am i missing sometihgng?

Maybe you got 8x because they were out of 4x. Have you burned some yet. Sounds like a good deal.

I would recommend the pioneer over those 2. Just make sure u upgrade the firmware to 1.14 and u will be indestructable! The burner is amazing and has amazing compatibility, especially with Yudens.

I love my Pioneer, but I did install a LiteON in my daughters computer and I have to say I am very impressed. Mostly with the ripping speed of this drive. It does rip a lot faster than the Pioneer and it burns just as flawless. So if you are going to be ripping from your burner I would suggest the LiteON, but I wouldnt reccomend ripping from your burner in the first place get a good DVD ROM to accomplish that task and you would be all set.

My vote is for NEC. I have 5 of varied flavors. Fast, compatible, and rock solid reliable, with perfect burns.
The old ones never die. I feel like a collector.

Yup, you can't go wrong with the nec. Plus at about $62, you get to laugh at all these suckers who spend more on drives that can only be just as good.

And I mean suckers in the best possible way. ;)
