The flip top is very good easy to install and easy to use with swapmagic.

I have a flip top on my V7 and use swap magic. It works great and is the cheapest way to go. Not sure you will be able to get a good mod chip for $40 or under anywhere. I have seen the no solder mod chips for the PS2 but most say you still need swap magic anyway, so what's the point.
My new slim PSTwo has a DMS4 Pro chip in it and i love it, but i spent some good $$$ and bought a pre-modded system because i can't solder and didn't want to screw it up.
