    first i have a ver7 ps2 flip-top smd 3.3. i use beall 4x dvd-r media. i've backed up 2 of my son's games, spongebob and tak. they work great. i did it with dvd decrypter. i tried to back up san andreas, but all i get is the intro screen, then nothing. itried almost all the other methods, and all returned the same outcome. is there something special that has to be done with this game???? also i backed up at different speeds.. 4x to 1x.

    thanks in advance....

    thanks for posting 007. i just tried to play the original and it does the same thing. it makes noise after the intro screen and then nothing happens... can it be a faulty orignal game???? maybe... i'am going to return it 2morrow for a new one. i will post 2morrow with the outcome....i should have tried it first, then backed it up.... so for all you people out there, test the original first, before you make coasters, like me....lol.

    USE BETTER MEDIA I use
    Verbatim dvd+r 8x 100 pack ( 24.99 )
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002IQ1I0/slickdeals/104-0984492-0108766

    The following list is in preference order. The best discs are near the top of the list. The discs at
    the bottom of the list are suitable only for a landfill.

    Almost flawless burns with 95-100% reliable results:
    PVC = Pioneer = (-R)(-RW)
    MXLRG01, MXLRG02 = Maxell = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
    MCC = Mitsubishi Chemicals = (-R)<-----------------VERBATIM MY CHOICE #1
    TDKG02 = TDK Corp = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
    TAIYOYUDEN or YUDEN = Taiyo Yuden = (-R)<--------------FUJIFILM (made in japan) MY CHOICE #2

    Decent discs, though not perfect, about 85-95%
    success rate:

    RICOHJPN = Ritek or Ricoh = (+R)
    SONYD04 = Sony = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
    PRODISC = Prodisc Media = (+RW)
    INFODISC = Infodisc Media = (+RW)
    RITEKG04 = Ritek = (-R)
    RITEKG03 = Ritek = (-R)
    OPTODISC = Optodisc = (-R)

    Quality can be very questionable, about 50-80% success rate:

    LEADDATA or LD01 or LD or LEDA = Lead Data = (-R)(-RW)
    PRINCO = Princo = (-R)(-RW)
    RITEK = Ritek = (-RW)
    ONIDTECH = OnidTech = (-R)

    Pathetic garbage media, landfill material, about 0-50% success rate:

    RITEKG01, RITEKG02 = Ritek = (-R)
    PIODATA = Lead Data = (-R) ... often sold as "Pioneer OEM" but that's false
    Unbranded PIO = Fake Pioneer = (-R) ... often sold as "Pioneer OEM" but that's false
    Unbranded SONY = Fake Sony = (-R)
    Unbranded MXL = Fake MXL = (-R)
    ACCU = Unknown OEM = (-R)
    LONGTEN = Unknown OEM = (-R)
    AN31, AN32, ANWELL, AN30 = Unknown OEM = (-R)
    OPTODISC = Optodisc = (+R)(+RW)
    MATRIX = Unknown OEM = (-R)
    CMC = CMC Magnetics = (+R)(-R)
    ANYTHING ELSE = Unknown OEM or NEW

    read my post on this subject.

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/132748

    also if your laser is on the way out you will notice problems. GTA san andreas really pushes the ps2 to its limits and makes the laser work at full throttle. If you are using the wrong media or your laser is old it simply wont work.

    replace your laser and you will have no more problems

    try turnig on the diagnosis mode.

    turn on ps2 no game in...

    turn on diagnosis in system config and the put gta sa in. note use browser to load dont reset. see if this fixes it.

    most games have a loading screen where the ps2 loads all the info it needs off the dvd before the game starts, and if your laser is older it just means your ps2 takes a few seconds more to load up. when the game is loaded the ps2 still spins the disc, but generally it is only playing audio etc.

    for example take pro evo soccer 4. on the loading screen it rips the info for the pitch, players, crowd stadium and all the physics of the game. whilst it is playing it is only reading the sounds for the crowd commentators and music etc.

    gta san andreas is CONSTANTLY streaming info from the disc as you play, for all the environment, cars, people sound etc, so if your laser is a bit worn you will notice it coz the buildings etc wont load quick enough, and if it is too slow then the game will freeze and you will get the DRE message.

    a dvd movie only requires the dvd drive to read at 1X speed whereas GTA needs it to run at 16X the whole time.

    a laser is very easy to replace. all you have to do is:-

    remove the top cover of the ps2

    remove the cover of the dvd drive

    power the unit up and eject the tray

    you will see the laser on two guide rails which have screws at the top. the rail on the right goes through the laser the one on the left simply supports it.

    remove the screw on the right guide rail and gently lift the laser out of the PS2. slide the guide rail out of the lens

    gently pull the data cable out of the laser being VERY CAREFUL!!

    your new laser will arrive with a tiny piece of solder on the bottom like a ball carefuly pick it off (this is to protect the laser from static during transit)

    the laser has a black clip in the port where the data ribbon goes. with a small screwdriver gently pop it out so you can insert the cable.

    insert the cable and push the black clip back in.

    now reassemble the laser giude rails etc the way you took it apart.

    easy!!

    if you need any more help or more details pm me

    PS diagnostic mode WILL NOT FIX ANYTHING.

    it is simply to diagnose what max speed your dvd drive can read at.

    jizmack is also correct about the media. use whatever media your ps2 prefers and unfortunately the only way to figure out what media to use is to try different ones. the major difference is between + and - R. use GTA for the game to try coz its the best to use as an example. you will notice that your ps2 prefers either one or the other.

    yeah it might slow the drive down but gta needs the dvd drive to read at 16X to play properly so what is the point is making it read slower than 16X???

    ive read the manual... plus i repair, build, and customise PS2's as well as and code my own f**kin games for the ps2 on linux....

    i think i know what im talking about.

    where do you get the parts to "build" a PS2?

    And is it worth the trouble when you can BUY ONE.

    Oh oh oh you customize them... but buying add-ons that kids manage to use to...

    Oh wait it took you 1 year to figure out how to programm for the PS2.

    How old are you? 5?????
