Hard drive will not power up when IDE cable connected. When the IDE cable is not connected the hard drive will power up. What is possibly the problem?

there's a power cable for the drive, too. not just an ide connector.

what do you mean it's not powering up? you mean your machine isn't detecting it? or do you mean there's no vibration or anything coming from the drive (signaling no internal movement)?

possible the ide cable is in reverse causing the hd not to power up.

It could also have a shorted out wire.

I tried a different IDE cable, a different hard drive(known to be working), and then a combination of both but still no power up. Something to do with motherboard?

I finally got it to work. From the look of the old IDE cable there was one wire on it that was broken for a centimeter in length. I replaced that IDE cable but then nothing. I believe this was part of the problem but it did not solve my situation totally.

The solution to the problem was that the positive and negative cables connecting the HDD light to the motherboard from the front of the case was switched around and the positive was on the negative and the negative on the positive instead of it being positive to postive and negative to negative. All I had to do was reverse the order and then everything works fine.

I found the solution by disconnecting all the unnecessary wires to the front of the case and only having the power button wires connected.
