hd not detected

    i have an externl usb 2.0 hard dirve. its really an enclosure wtih a western digital 40gb on it. i plugged it into my usb port, turned it on and windows xp installed the drivers for it and all that. i went to my computer to look at it but its not there. i found it in the device manager and there are no errors but no matter what i do i cant find it in my computer.
    i have a dell dimension 4600, windows xp pro, 512 ram, 80gb internal, 2.8 ghz.

    any help would be gretaly appreciated

    Hi shenfo
    Has the drive been partitioned, formatted and assigned a drive letter. You can checked that via Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.

    chthomson: I think you are on track.

    shenfo: You do need to format the HD. If it is not drive "C", Windows is not going to prompt you to do this.

    This is from a "RAID" drive experience.

    but how do i format it, if i cant find it anywhere?

    and where is admin tools and all that?

    Try Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
