Re: Unauthorized Use of Universal Motion Pictures
    Notice ID: 324581
    5/7/2003

    Dear Sir or Madam:

Universal City Studios Productions LLLP and its affiliated companies (collectively, "Universal") are the exclusive owners of copyrights in many motion pictures, including the motion pictures listed below. It has come to our attention that PenTeleData Inc. - Cable is the service provider for the IP address listed below, from which unauthorized copying and distribution (downloading, uploading, file serving, file "swapping" or other similar activities) of Universal's motion picture(s) listed below is taking place. We believe that the Internet access of the user engaging in this infringement is provided by <<ISP Name>> or a downstream service provider who purchases this connectivity from PenTeleData Inc. - Cable.
This unauthorized copying and distribution constitutes copyright infringement under Section 106 of the U.S. Copyright Act . Depending upon the type of service PenTeleData Inc. - Cable is providing to this IP address, it may have legal and/or equitable liability if it does not expeditiously remove or disable access to the motion picture(s) listed below, or if it fails to implement a policy that provides for termination of subscribers who are repeat infringers (see, 17 U.S.C. ยง512). Despite the above, Universal believes that the entire Internet community benefits when these matters are resolved cooperatively. We urge you to take immediate action to stop this infringing activity and inform us of the results of your actions. We appreciate your efforts toward this common goal. The undersigned has a good faith belief that use of the motion pictures in the manner described herein is not authorized by Universal, its agent or the law. The information contained in this notification is accurate. Under penalty of perjury, the undersigned is authorized to act on behalf of Universal with respect to this matter. Please be advised that this letter is not and is not intended to be a complete statement of the facts or law as they may pertain to this matter or of Universal's positions, rights or remedies, legal or equitable, all of which are specifically reserved.
    Very truly yours,

What should I do? Could they really come to my house and check my hard drive? How come the movie studio is allowed to monitor my internet activity? I think only the cops, if anybody, should have that right.

I think your in some serious trouble. Get rid of anything of you HD that you should have. In fact do a system restore so that everything's removed off your computer so it's like how you brought it. Do exactly what they say and don't piss them off.

Why weren't you using kazza lite?

    I was using Kazza lite.
Hey, they can shut off my cable if they must, but nobody is getting ahold of my computer without a warrant.

did you put in your real email adress when you setup kazzalite they could have traced you through that

also download file guardian if you continue to use p2p it is a file sharing firewall the only bad thing is you have to update it regurally

    anyway good luck

I wouldn't use my real email address. Apparently, they traced me through my IP address and the MAC address of my cable modem. I would like to learn more about those things if have any suggestions of where I can do that let me know.
The laywer from my ISP told my that the movie companies go into the file sharing programs to see who's got what and that's how they track you. That's one way they do it anyway.
However, I think it's harder to see the files if you're not sharing (pretty sure they can see them anyway though)
I deleted the one file they told me to, and I'm not going to download anything for a while. But when I do, I can't share anything *sorry people*
because with my ISP a 2nd violation results in automatic termation of my internet and cable tv accounts and I live in the middle of nowhere without any compettition so I'd be totally screwed.

Just in case, get the privacy patch for kazaa-lite, look for it on google, it shows that you do not show files, some people will stop your download without sharing files, but it is worth it.
here's the link, look under old news:
http://www.k-lite.tk/_X_X_X_X_X_[small]This is an amazingly imformative site with many places to find information and help. Please support it.

privacy patch does nothing its a false sense of security.

remove the file and email them saying you did.

if you want to be very safe a "system restore" does nothing.
the FBI and other police agencies have systems that take the plates from your hard drive and can access and find whats been on your hard drive from up to 5-6 formats. I would be formatting my hard drive about 10 times to be safe.

If you go to the following site and download spybot - search and destroy. This claims to have an to have an excellent tool called "secure Shredder". You drop the file into this and it will make it unrecoverable from the drive - so you wont need to spend hours recovering, formating ect.

Dont forget to make a donation -not sure if its available here on this site ?

yeh dela...your trying to make this not a big deal - but it is.

I have never seen any email like this and i have asked many friends and other message boards and no one has. This is pretty serious stuff.

That hard drive would be smashed into about 100 pieces and buried all over if it was me.

go to the emule forum! check the amount of people who got the EXACT email except their source was edonkey! and its as easy as to runa bot and when it finds the sources with the file, it gets the ip address, from that it gets the isp and then emails them only changing a small bit of information this time! It's not that hard to do! ISP's are only warning anyway! and remember most isps advertise the speed by telling how fast it can download music and stuff!!

I'd doubt they will suspend your service, they would warn a few times before they would do that!!

I've heard of these before also. I called my ISP and asked them how far they would go with something like that.

The guy there, after a little man to man (nerd to nerd) talk, told me that when its all said and done, they won't do anything.

My ISP's sole purpose in life is to get customers. Most people who have highspeed have it because they want to get pirated music, videos, software. With that said, they're not going to rat out their customer base, it would be bad business.

The guy said that if they supplied a warrant, then my ISP would comply, but that's the only way. Also they have to give their customers a few days notice before providing any personal information.

Providing any personal information?? actually there are laws that should protect p2p users against that but in the recent verizon case, the RIAA (bastards!!) have got passed these laws!

Doesn't everybody know about all those riders that were attached to the anti-terrorism Patriot Act? One in particular allows any government worker and I mean ANYBODY like even a teacher or a postal worker to be given all your emails and internet activity upon request without a warrant! I learned this from Techtv. Don't know about the verizon case you're referring to, however.

about a year ago about 50 people where i work all got certified letters from directTV about hacking satelite TV. they found them because they all ordered their equipment thru a website in canada that got busted and turned over all their records. out of the 50 about 40 just ignored it and have never heard anything about it again, the 10 that called lawyers ended up paying about 300 bucks each so the lawyer can handle it. well here it is a year later and 10 people are out 300 bucks, got rid of their satelite equipment, and are now paying for cable TV and the lawyers they hired cant even get directTV to call them back! all they did was send out letters, thats it! the 40 people that ignored it are still enjoying 400 channels on satelite. i wouldn't worry about it to much, it would more like piss me off than anything. if they are gonna be that retarded, they better bust me for all the cassette tapes i got around here of tapes i copied in the 80's. might as well give me 20yrs to life for taping those charmed and buffy episodes for my daughter too!
