When no disc is in the drive, the directory listing clearly shows that I have a DVD-RW drive. However, as soon as I put in a DVD-R disc (I tried with various blends), the directory listing shows that I have a CD Drive.

This means that I am not able to write to the disc since the CD drive does not recognize my DVD-R disc. When I look at the property of the drive, it shows zero free space.

I went to Sony website the download the latest 1.51 driver, but during the installation, the screen told me that I have already have the driver.

I am trying to burn a movie that I have created from mpeg to Video files using Nero and DVD Shrink. the video is ready to be burned except I can't get my DVD+/-RW drive to work properly.

I read up on various forums and can't seem to find a solution. Can someone help? Thank you!

When you place a blank DVD into a DVD burner, Windows will recognize that blank DVD as a CD and My Computer will show the drive as a CD drive since it thinks a CD is in the drive. Why? Because Windows lacks native support for DVDs but has built-in support for CDs. We have to use third party programs for burning DVDs.

The only thing that matters is if your burning software like Nero recognizes the blank disk as a DVD to be burned. Have you tried Nero? Does it balk at burning the disk?
