Shouldn't you have a software button or a bootup command or something that let's you disable it without opening the console?

I don't know. when I bought my ps2 it already had the modchip and I'm trying to play an online game but I need to disable the chip and I hope somebody knows how to do it. The only thing I know is that to play burned games I have to reboot twice.

This is for a different Mars modchip but worth a try.
    3. Disable mod-chip function (Sleep mode):

    - Put the PS2 to Standby mode. (Red Light)
    - Press and hold Reset for at least 2 second until the blue LED light of the Eject button lights up.
    - Insert the game or DVD movie into the disc tray and press Eject to close the tray.
    - You can also tap Reset and the PS2 will remain in Sleep mode and boot in-region original
game and DVD movie. (The game or DVD movie must be the same as the PS2 region)
    - The MarsIII is disabled until it has been put back into STANDBY and will boot normally.
