I have a huge problem, I'm afraid it'll get worse! As soon as I connect to the internet I receive runtime errors and every ten minutes or so music plays in the background and thena website will pop up every once in a while. HOW DO I GET RID OF THIS PROBLEM!!!

Yes... you do have a huge problem. In addition to a WareOut infection... you have multiple SDBot/Rbot infections one of which drops a RootKit into your computer.

Your machine has been completely compromised.

In a situation like this... your safest course of action would be to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows.

I can try and clean this up for you. But even then... I cannot guarantee the security of your system as I have no way of what other damage has been done by the backdoors and RootKit.

Let me know what you decide.

Well I don't have the original windows disc. It came as a 100gg HD that was partitioned into 80 for myself and the remainding 20 as a system restore. I coul run that, do a system restore. How would I be looking then?

Oh and another thing... the last time I did a system restore for this laptop, I'm not sure if there was an option to format the drive. So if you don't mind... if this is my best bet. Could you give me a step by step. Its not that I don't know how I just want to be 100% sure the first time around you know. I actually use this computer for work and school, for work its actually my main tool. I'm a CAD operator and yeah... so I appreciate the help, really thanks so much!

FYI, there is a Smitfraud hijacker in there which has hijacked your DNS settings, meaning that a Man-In-the-Middle attack is likely. A MITM attack allows any data transiting to and from your computer to be intercepted and read. Better change all your online passwords from a clean, safe computer ... immediately.

I don't think a System Restore will help you. Too many sophisticated nasties. I'm not even sure SR would work as many of these things wipe out restore points, but it's a moot point anyway. I suggest picking up a copy of XP Pro while you can still get it- it's cheap. Then boot from your fresh XP CD and have it format your drives. You can repartition them if you like, but I as a matter of secure practice always re-partition even if the partitions are the same as the previous ones, just to make sure the Boot Records are re-written. When starting the Windows CD, select a fresh install: Do not use "Repair" or simply allow a reinstallation of Windows.

Obviously you will want to back up your important data first, but do so detached from the internet. In fact, I strongly suggest disconnecting from the net immediately, now, and staying off until you get your drive completely reformatted. There is too much potential for data leakage with what you've got running.

Well I don't have a copy of Windows, my laptop didn't come with one like I mentioned, so i was wondering if I got a copy just to format my HD, and then once that was done do a system restore, wouldn't that put me in the clear?

@Dunker - The DNS Hijack(the 017's) are more commonly known as WareOut. A typical smitfraud infection manifests itself in different ways. Are they related? Possibly... though I've never seen anyone make that relation. Regardless... between the Bots and RootKit... the DNS Hijack is the lesser of Thomas's worries as it can be easily remedied. But you are correct about a Windows System Restore not being the best course of action. He is going to need to do a full restore from the Recovery Partition on his Laptop. I also agree with him changing any/all passwords to websites he may use... especially if he uses the Laptop for anything financial. One of the Bots is a known Password Stealer.

@Thomas - Since you've gone with the safest route... backup any documents you think you may need for school or whatnot to CD/DVD/USB Drive/etc. You will then need to do what is called a Destructive Recovery. This will Format your C: drive and restore your Laptop to its factory settings.

    Follow the instructions found here:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=bph07145&lc=en

For recovering from either within Windows(Recovering from Windows XP) or from Startup(Recovering during startup)

    Good luck!

@Kotaguy - So if I just follow those steps from that link that you provided me I should be %100 again? Cause from what I understood from Dunker, it kinda sunk itself in pretty good and I'm basically screwed. But if you're telling me what you said should leave me at no risk then I'll start as soon as you get a response.

    Also...
I haven't signed on to anything other than my laptop since I got this... well at least since I've known about this, I believe it came from a program I tried to download Thursday(02/15/07) night... so would you still recommend that I change all my passwords. I've already begun saving all my work, and I will go ahead and change my passwords, it wouldn't hurt to be safe.

What Dunker was referring to is a Windows System Restore. All that does is is restore from a Restore Point that created by Windows itself. And yes... some infections can delete/infect those Restore Points.

The link I gave you will guide you through restoring your laptop to the condition you originally bought it in. It will format the Hard Drive and reinstall Windows. Doing so will totally get rid of the infections present on your lappy.

And yes... change all your passwords as one of the Bots is a PWS(Password Stealer).

Here goes another HJT Log that I ran after doing a destructive recovery... I followed the steps exactly, but while i was doing the microsoft updates a lot of the security updates wouldn't install... so I'm a little scared that something is still here... So please let me know as soon as you can, if I look good or not. Thanks again in advance.

    You're good to go.

The updates issue could be caused by interruptions in the transfer when downloading them... or a problem with the Windows Updates site itself.

Did you try to install those updates again?

In the middle of that process right now... just waiting to find out, the first time I had 67 updates to go through, I missed 26(failed) so i restarted and started up again, now I'm getting 29 updates.. and I'm just waiting patiently. Thanks for letting me know, that was a relief. One last question.. I remember when this started i did a lot of research and one thing i looked into was smitfraud. I found a site that tells you how to manually take care of it and it had a list of processes to get rid of... one I remember seeing, cause I tried to stop it,was msmsgs.exe, I still have that in my task manager, what is that? is that bad? dangerous? if so, do you know how to get rid of it? cause it keeps coming back each time i stop it.
