Please help me with a step by step tutorial, if possible, to isolate an image. I want to take images out of photos and place them (the images I remove/extract) elsewhere. I understand there is masking technique in Gimp, but I don't know quite what to do. Any help is appreciated. I am new to photo editing.

I'm not a GIMP specialist, but you might try using the magic wand tool. Try tweaking the treshold value until it selects the contours of the image part that you want. How well it works depends on how well it stands out from the background.

Then just copy/paste to another image.
