I do not have a modchip, and Im going to be importing a game very soon. Im sorry for being such a newb, but could someone describe in detail the different ways of accomplishing this? I have a US ps2, I hear you can use gameshark or something? and I need suggestions besides a modchip, because currently I dont have one.

Hmm, ok, isn't there just some easy way to play an import with a gameshark? without tempering with the system??

You don't void your warranty using the knife trick. You do need a gameshark/action replay. Wherever it says GS2 or AR2 it means gameshark/action replay.

You may be able to boot imports regularly with a gameshark but i doubt it.

Ok, for this Knife Trick, swap method where you put in a gameshark then pull the tray out slighty etc etc. Does this really work? for all ps2 models?

If you want an easier method and don't want to get a modchip, you could get a fliptop. It works just like the knife trick except the top makes it much much easier. It's very easy to install, but it does void your warranty.
