How do you determine what type of Mpeg file a mpg file extension is

    This may sound elementary, but I have a number of files that have .mpg extensions on the them and I can't figure out if they are Mpeg- 1 2 3 or 4s.

    I need them to be in Mpeg-4 to play them on a player I am working with.

    I have Nero 7 Ultra if that helps but I am not sure what utility would assist me.

    If the file extension is .MPG it's either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. MPEG-4 files come in a variety of different containers including .AVI and .MP4 (the official container).
