I am having trouble recording on to DVD+R media. I keep getting Write Errors. When using the "LightScrib" Blanks it seems to work ok, when using other types of Blank DVD+R (Memorex and TDK Printable Media the Error messages appear and the Disc is unusable. I am trying to make copies of the DVD’s I have created for family members. What might be causing this?

You don't state the model of your drive or recorder, but it appears to be compatible with CMC MID codes (unless the LightScribe media you are using are Verbatim LightScribe discs--made by CMC but using the MCC MID code) and not Ritek codes used by the Memorex or TDK printable discs. That's just a guess based on limited information because both Memorex and TDK also use CMC for some of their printable discs.

There is also the possibility that the printable coatings are defective and have pulled up the edges of the discs to create tilt problems. This happened with some early 4X printable discs using certain coatings (used only for DVD+R but not on TDK printable discs of either format.) This is less likely but still possible.

The DVD Drive is a Sony. It worked great in the past. You are correct, the LightScribe Discs that work are Verbatim.
Do the Drive ware out? This one is approx. 3 years and has burned a lot of CD's and DVD's.

Hi, Brian! Just as JoeRyan expressed. We need more information to properly diagnose your issue. Like Joe, my first thought is burner vs. media compatability. Has the burner's firmware been updated? What model is your Sony burner?

I will have to get the Model number when I get home. The Firmware has not been updated. Can you explain how to update the firmware?

Not a problem. We can provide both instructions and web link for the firmware update after we know the model of the burner.

Please, make absolutely sure of the correct model. If the wrong firmware is installed, it can destroy the burner!

I will be able to verify the model in about 21/2 hours. Will you be able to assist me then?

    I appreciate your help.

I just copied a DVD on another (Slower) PC with the same model Drive. It worked fine. The next step will be to swap the Drives.

Had some unexpected company drop by, but back on here now. Glad to hear you were able to perform the firmware update. Was the firmware update from version 1.0A to 1.0F? What program are you using to make your DVD backups?

I swapped out the drives, the original pc is working fine. i just copied a DVD perfectly. Perhaps the drive went bad. Tomorrow I will test the drive out in the slower pc.

    I am using Nero 6.6.0.18.

    Thanks for your help.

Sounds like your on the right track to getting the problem resolved. A new burner does not cost that much. Try using the Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media. Keep the burn speeds to 8x or slightly less. Let us now how everything worked out. Good luck!

Thanks. Do these types of drives go bad very often?

Do you know if Verbatim media comes in printable?

    Thanks again.

Yes all drives are pretty much throw-aways these days, you pretty much get what you pay for. At twenty plus bucks a pop how good can they be.
