This might not be in the right area but since its dealing with video conversion i thought it might be best here.

    I am currently running a 2.4ghz 256ram 30gig harddrive 4200rpm

the question is...I want to speed up conversion time after i capture the video. will changing to a 7200rpm 60gig internal do the trick? also...after doing that will I acheive the speeds needed for capturing if I do a firewire external drive that is 7200rpm 160gig?

A faster hard drive will surely help in capturing, but nothing speeds up conversion time more than a faster CPU.
