my aunt bought a 300-500 wat saround sound system from jvc but her main console (the thing with the dvd player) broke and started clanking when it gets turned on i wanted to know if i could use the speakers by buying a white and red male to an 8-pin (s-video like) male that is conected to the back of the powered amp. she used it a while in its audio imput mode but it recently just started swithing itself back to dvd mode even when nothing was touched

I don't know exactly what you're talking about, but the red and white audio cables will not give you 5.1 surround. You might be able to get Dolby Pro Logic (simulated surround), but that's it. I'm not familiar with the 8 pin connection you mentioned..........
