I am trying to burn avi files onto DVDs. I am trying to do this with the Data DVD option in Nero 6.6.0.3. I am running into this "illegal disc" error message. I have burned DVDs with this DVD brand before (Memorex) but for some reason, Nero does not like it this time around. I have also tried burning with HPNow, and also the old school 'select and burn to CD' but ran into error messages there too. I'm thinking I should just stick with Nero. Log below. Any thoughts on what is happening? I sincerely appreciate any help you could provide.

Try updating your Nero, both packages, from here

    Package 1:
    http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2:
    http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

Although you have had success with these discs before they are poor quality, try Verbatim or Sony (made in Japan)

You have Roxio installed, it clashes with Nero, to remove, run this zapper http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

    Hi, Gwendolyn
Thanks for the quick prognosis and suggestions. I've updated both Nero and NVE3 on my computer and zapped whatever Roxio-zap wanted zapped. Roxio-zap did come across some disagreeable files. It did say that they were parts of other programs, although I did not recognize any programs as being of any use to me, but I hope I did not create problems elsewhere. At any rate, I will get a stack of Sony DVD-Rs and will try burning tonight. I will let you know how things turn out.

    Thanks again!

Shoot. It still didn't work. I tried burning an avi file onto a DVD via the Data DVD option of Nero 6.6.0.18. I think I got the same illegal disc error as last time. I also switched from Memorex to Sony DVD-Rs.

Thanks for the continued help, Gwendolyn.
Isn't the procedure you are recommending going to convert the avi to a DVD file? So, that's different from simply burning an avi file onto a DVD, right?, which is what I was trying to do.

The reason I wanted to burn an avi file onto a DVD is that I thought this would be easier than having to convert the avi to a DVD file then burning that onto a DVD. I recently bought a DivX DVD exactly for this reason, that is so I could play avi's. But your suggestion is to convert the avi to DVD, which means I could play it on any DVD players and would have no need for the DivX DVD. Do I have this right?

The other thing was that I bought Sony DVD-Rs, not DVD+Rs. Does that matter?

When using NeroVision, AVI files are automatically converted to a DVD compliant format.

Shouldnt be any problems with the discs you have purchased.

A movie of around 2 hours equates to approximately 700mb AVI file...after NeroVision converts it, it will become around 4gb and fit onto a standard DVD.

The whole process should take from 1.5 hrs to 2hrs.
