    Hi brownc2
    Here's a few suggestions:

    Recorder: <ASUS DRW-0402P/D> Version: 1.05
Older drive but there is more recent firmware version for it from 2004 -
    1.07.

CdRomPeripheral : TSSTcorp CDRWDVD TS-H492C atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: Off
Turn DMA back on for this drive. Here's a guide.

    Physical memory : 502MB
    Free physical memory: 75MB
    Memory in use : 85 %

Alot of memory in use. No multi tasking and close unneeded programs.
Do a disc cleanup, defrag and run a anti virus & spyware scan too if you haven't very recently.

    File 'Drivers\InCDfs.SYS
Nero's InCD can sometimes cause problems. If you're not using it uninstall it and run the Clean Tool.

Give those a go and let us know.

Tried to update firmware on ASUS DRW-0402P/D to version 1.07: It fails - says failed to load binary file ?????

Followed the guide for the DMA - removed and it redetected.

Currently running defrag and disk clean-up

Any suggestions on why it won't update to 1.07?

Defrag and disk clean-up are complete

Could it be a media issue? I usually use Maxell but purchased Memorex this time. I have used both in the past and they both worked. I noticed in the log that it says that my media is "unknown".

My burner burns CD's fine, just not DVD's.

Any other suggestions? See latest log.

Could be a media issue - from the log the disc are fully recognized:

Can always try another brand like Verbatim - look for 8x for this drive.

But you're still getting an internal target failure & might also be why be you're getting the error updating the firmware.

2 causes for that can be the drive itself and/or the ide cable.
And the one drive is still in PIO even after reinstalling it.

So do you have another pc you can try this drive in? Best way to test these.
It's an older drive so your best bet may be a new one w/ a new cable.
    Both are pretty cheap now.

But you also still have alot of memory in use 88% this time.
So may be playing into it too.
Look in the system tray (bottom right hand corner) and close all unneeded programs there too.

Did you do a virus and spyware scan?

Bought some new media (DVD-R HP brand) and things are working again.

Yes - I also did a virus scan and a spyware scan.

Thanks for you help. This forum is great and I will use again!
