Apparently in the latest NFO released by PDX, they say their ISO loader will work with firmware up to 1.51, and 1.54 is yet to be tested. And it IS possible to get online with firmware 1.51 using a firmware check bypass method.

i wouldn't be in a rush to update any firmware right now. As far as we know, there is nothing harmful in the latest PS3 FW but for what reason would you update? As long as you can go online, play around with Linux & COUGHrunisoloadersCOUGH then don't be updating anything.
wait until PDX releases their SW & the external usb cable comes out. Then let someone else test it first.
