I am using a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N drive and tonight it doesn't recognize any dvd that I put into it. cd's work fine. Any suggestions? If the drive is shot, any recommendations for a new internal one?

Does it not recognise commercial DVDs or blank DVDs, or both?

It doesn't recognize any dvd format burnt or commercial; however, it will play cds and cd-rom.

Go into hardware manager, uninstall your secondary IDE controller and reboot - see if that helps.

No, still no luck with that. Thanks for help. Any other suggestions? Is it difficult to install an internal drive in a laptop?

It depends on the type of fitting your drive has - some are merely ones that "clip", so to speak, into place; others are harder to install.

See if you can have a look how yours is - newer laptops should typically be easier i think.

Personally, I don't have a laptop, nor have I changed the drive on one.. I@m speaking from things I've noted from the forums..

This link may be of help:

If I find any better ones, I'll post back.

I guess I'll take it somewhere tomorrow to have it looked at. Are those slim external drives a decent buy? Anyone?

If I were you i'd go for an external drive. Typically, laptop drives don't hold up for too long.
