So I can access the hard drive and drag and drop files. I need to back up my iPod files.

    Thanks in advance.

you can do it without installing Linux, you can use red kawa file server to access your pc hd using the ps3's web browser and save them to the ps3 hd.
the files will only save on the ps3 if they are supported.
