As the below link shows an automatic process where RipIt4Me goes through the process for you I gave it a shot then tried to burn it with ImgBurn as someone told me that is the only real way to get the layer break to copy properly :
    http://www.ripit4me.org/guide.html

It got to 99%-100% complete and I got the Error :
Close Track Failed - Power Calibration Error.

I used a TDK disc as that is all I had left, it was my last 1, that's 20 wasted DL discs now.
I was getting the Power Calibration Error with Verbatim using certain methods also so I don't think it was the TDK disc that made it fail in the last second of the burn, + if you read the first post of this thread out of the last 22 burns I've made 2 successful burns and one was on the TDK brand.

I think that's it for me....

I purchased 3 Verbatim DVD+R DL discs today
I managed to get a trial version of AnyDVD running.
I did it this way as I have had success this way in the past.

*Turned on AnyDVD and selected the drive I put the original DVD in that I wanted to copy.
    *Opened Nero Express
    *DVD-Video Files
*Selected the original DVD in the drive (the audio and video ts files)
*Then loaded them in using "add" and selected the files and burned at 2.4X.
This has been successfual in the past, but I got the Error below in the log.
I don't have the knowledge to understand it.
Can anyone see what went wrong and why ?
In the last few seconds I can see "Key Illegal Request" and "Key Medium Error" and "Power Calibration Error".

Will going through this process exactly the same except burning with CDClone and not nero really make a difference with the layer break ?
I've only got 2 Verbatim discs left ?

Any help is really appreciated , thanks !

You should have bought some DVD+R DL-RW (Re-writables)
This way you can use the disc over if it does not burn correctly. But it is your money that your flushing down the toilet.

Have you tried DVD Decrypter to do a copy of your Dual-Layer movies? (note: This is DVD Decrypter different from DVDFAB Decrypter that you have mentioned above)

Below is a link to the program and I added a little guide to help you out.

    http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/DVD_Decrypter/1011845169/1

You might want to run AnyDVD in the background while ripping the movie to your HDD with DVD Decrypter. This will help with any encryption that DVD Decrypter needs help with.

The first step is to rip the DVD to the Hard Drive. Start AnyDVD and then Start DVD Decrypter. You are going to rip the DVD to your HDD in ISO format so you will choose MODE/ISO/READ follow the below image...

Now it is time to burn the ISO image to a dual layer disc.

Start off by setting the option for DVD Decrypter to Calculate Optimal setting for the layer break...

Now it is time to burn the DVD after you set up the layer break. Do this by doing MODE/ISO/WRITE

    Hope this works for you.

    Hi larrylje,

OK I just made a successful burn !

First I should say I have previously failed 2 or 3 times using DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 to do an Iso Read and Iso write.
I actually only downloaded DVDFab Decrypter 3 a few days ago, before that I had used for a couple of months the one you suggested which I re-downloaded today as you suggested, like I said when I was previously using that version I did try an ISO Read & Write a couple of times and the burns failed, so was very hesitant to try your suggestion as the only difference you suggested to something I had previously tried with no success was to have AnyDVD running (which sounded risky to me as I have read a number of times including in this thread, not to run AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter at the same time as the confuse each other or something like that).

I really hope that is the end of all my problems, but it sounds too good to be true, is AnyDVD really the solution to this ? I know I recently had 15 failed burns, then 2 successful burns then 5 failed after that, so I hope the next few burns don't end up being failed burns again and this successful burn wasn't just a coincidence....

But this time an ISO Read & Write with DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 with AnyDVD running in the background has worked.

I don't understand how AnyDVD made the difference when I have failed doing a DVD Decrypter ISO Read and Write in the past, what is even more confusing is that like I said I have previously been advised not to use AnyDVD with DVD Decrypter....

Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy about this and appreciate your effort to help, I just hope this wasn't success by chance as recently I've had 15 fails, 2 successful, then about 5 fails again, so your method which has given me success today is very welcome !
I just hope it works next time, I've got 1 Verbatim DL disk left, I should have something I genuinely want to copy onto it within the next week, so I should know by then if it works for a second time in a row !

Does the burn log look OK ?

To backtrack a little, I can't seem to easily buy DVD+RW DL discs, I've tried all my local shops but none seem to stock them, I'm not sure if it's to do with my location (Australia) but I doubt that is the reason. It seems to be the only type of DVD they don't stock, maybe because it's such a new type of media and few people are purchasing them at the moment ....

Thanks for your help ! What a releif... For now hahah, this DL issue had been really bugging me for weeks....

    Hi,
I have a question about AnyDVD relating to my previous post.
Going by the info of my last post does this must mean AnyDVD helps burn the layer break properly and is not just used to crack the copyright on the discs ? Is that correct ?
If not my problem isn't really solved as I had a couple of DVD+R DL discs that failed when I tried to copy them (without using AnyDVD), so obviously the DVD+R DL disc didn't fail because of copyright protection, it must have been something to do with the layer break as I have never had a problem burning single layer DVD's....
So I'm thinking my recent successful result was because AnyDVD helped burn the "layer break" correctly, would that be true ?, I thought it was only a copyright tool ?

As far as I know AnyDVD would not effect the layer break when burning the ISO to disc. It is there to help with encryption that DVD Decrypter can not handle when ripping the DVD.

On another note whoever told you not to use AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter together gave you wrong information. I have always used the 2 together with no problem. I have also seen allot of other members recommend using AnyDVD with DVD Decrypter. Yes their are some that say DVD Decrypter is outdated but it is still a great App to use with conjunction with AnyDVD when needed.

You might also want to make sure you are getting Verbatim Dual-Layer disc which seem to be the most preferred Dual-Layer disc made. This kind of sounds like a compatibility issue with your burner and media you are using. (Getting a hit and miss successful burn on the media your using now) Plus in addition it could be how you are backing up the DVD on the Dual-Layer disc.

I would not even begin to tell you where to get the media or even be able to suggest an online store to get them from since I live in the USA and not Australia.

The only reason I showed you the DVD Decrypter method is how you where backing up your DVDs with Nero. I have never heard of anyone backing up their dual-layer DVDs in that way. I have manly seen people using DVD Decrypter or IMGBurn to do it. So I thought maybe the reason you where having problems is the way you where backing up the DVDs using Nero.

I have not actually backed up allot of Dual Layer disc myself but i do read and learn on what other methods and steps others use to do this incase I ever want to get into that processes myself. So all I can say is try the DVD Decrypter step again and make sure you are using good quality Dual-Layer disc and burn at half the rated speed. Try to stay away from burning at max speed.

    AnyDVD can be used with DVD Decrypter. I have used it quite a bit with the following settings in DVDD for ripping(IFO or ISO) or burning(ISO);

    In 'tools' 'setting'

Uncheck 'Check for structural protection' in the 'General', IFO read mode' and 'ISO write mode' tabs.

Select 'None' in the CSS tab

Optional - select 'Interface ElbyCDIO' in the I/O tab. Have also used 'SPTE Microsoft' which I think is the default without problem.

With these settings AnyDVD does all the actual unprotection work and DVDD just rips to your hard drive. The two programs run just fine this way and with AnyDVD updates you will keep up with the latest protection schemes. Of course AnyDVD is not free but buying it probably would have saved you some significant bucks on the wasted DVD -R DL disks.

If you don't want to buy AnyDVD there are free solutions (Ripit4ME =
http://www.ripit4me.org/ ) is one that comes to mind. OOPS just saw that this program was already mentioned in a previous post, anyway it pretty good and worth another mention.

    Best Regards

update; I believe that DVDD preserves the original layer break when used to burn in ISO mode. The same should be true for Imgburn ( http://www.imgburn.com/ ) which is based on the burn portion of DVDD.

I'm sorry, I worded things incorrectly, I know that AnyDVD doesn't help "burn" the DVD.

What I should have asked was does AnyDVD help prevent errors with the layer break ? I thought AnyDVD was just used for copyright stuff ?

Like I said, I've been getting these failed burns also trying to copy DVD+R DL discs, so obviously my problem isn't a copyright issue as a DVD+R DL disc would not have copyright on them.

Some info I have received from failed burn logs makes me believe the reason I have wasted 20 DL DVD's has something to do with the layer break not woking out as well as it should (also because I have burned loads of single layer DVD's without a problem).

So as I have successfully burned a DVD by using AnyDVD I'm thinking that AnyDVD somehow helped things work out better relating to the layer break?, or does it only help with copyright ?

Does AnyDVD somewhere in the process of ripping to the hard drive help things work out better relating to the layer break ?
Sorry if that has been answered already, I don't always understand the more technical terms that are sometimes used.

    @bomber07,

I think you are correct when you state that AnyDVD does not effect the layer break. The ripping/burning program (in this example DVD Decrypter) handles this. In ISO mode DVDD preserves the original layer break. Note the CloneCD (another product from Slysoft the make of AnyDVD) also preserves the original layer break. Note that CloneDVD2 (another Slysoft) product does not preserve the original layer break but computes one on its own so to speak.

But in summary do not think your problem has anything to do with AnyDVD with respect to layer breaks. Too bad you can't get some rewritable DL disks for testing in order to isolate your problem. As other have said set the write speed to a lower value (4X for 8X, 2X for 4X). By using the Vebatim DL media you are using the best IMO.

I agree with kringles AnyDVD as I also stated before has northing or no control over the layer break. It is just helping DVD Decrypter with the encryption. But you said the last burn you had made worked perfect. So keep trying it with DVD Decrypter. Hopefully you do not run into problems again. Just use Verbatim DL disc and half the rated speed. Do not multi-task while burning the disc and shut down any programs that are running in the background. (Anti-spyware/Security Systems/Any Program that helps monitor your system)
