From the kind of error you receive, it seems that Nero is trying to encode the AVI.

If your DVD Player loads DivX files (and if the file if a XviD you simply to use Nic's FourCC changer (a file named AviC.exe, just 6 Kb) to change the AVI's FourCC code from Xvid to DivX). If you do so, you just have to burn a Data CD so you don't need any codec. You simply copy 1:1 from the AVI to the media without needing to decode it.
Are you sure Nero isn't trying (error) to encode the AVI instead of simply burning it?

actually wouldnt mind seeing the properties of the file. Can you download avicodec and run your file through it.Post the results.Just wondering if its a dud avi or maybe nero cant encode it due to some file irregularities so try another encoder like convert X
