yes the ps3 console will have reverse compatibility with ps2 games but not with ps1 games and they will stop making psone and games etc it is due for release in 2005 and has a panisonic processor which is suposed to be very advanced compaired to what we have seen to date which is to be expected however the leap is suposedly going to be greater than that of ps1 graphics to ps2

if you wnat more info check this out

My guess is the price will be the same when the ps2 came out more than likely not $299 US. Anymore than that then they better start including stuff like harddrives, built in memory cards, broadband adapter, etc. or you might as well buy a computer and wait for an emulator for it to come out.

Here is a article on the ps3 from ign

    The PlayStation 3
Over the years, console technology has improved drastically. Who would've thought that in just a few short years we'd go from playing games like Super Mario World to playing MechAssault online against opponents thousands of miles away. The Xbox, love it or hate it, has probably made the biggest splash in the console world due to its inclusion of a hard drive and Ethernet port. With the new standard set, what can we expect from the next generation of consoles, specifically the successor to the PlayStation 2? Well, the rumors have already started, and if even a small fraction of them turn out to be a reality, we may be seeing games in a whole new light.

The biggest news about the PlayStation 3 (not an official name) is that it will utilize Sony's Cell processor. The Cell architecture allows it to draw resources from any other PS3 if need be by ways of a giant network. This potentially allows for some serious computing power. If the PS3 does in fact use the Cell processor, it would imply that the console will have to have a built-in Ethernet port. But that's pretty much a given, don't you think?

PS3 rumors also point to a few other obvious inclusions such as a hard drive and DVD movie playback, but there are also plenty of other cool features that are a little more iffy, if you know what we mean. One of these is backwards compatibility with PSOne and PS2 games. We'd all love it if this were true, so let's keep our fingers crossed. Other PS3 rumors are that there will some sort of connectivity between the PS3 and the PSP, the console will have TiVo-like functions as well support for CD/DVD recordable media, and that the next PlayStation will feature wireless connectivity. We see all of these features as possible, even likely, but the console is so far off from release that we're pretty sure that even Sony doesn't know what all exactly the PS3 will include.

Of course, there are plenty of wild rumors too. Do we really think that the PS3 will let users burn CDs and DVDs? Not really. There is so much speculation, but as of now, there is really no hard evidence of anything. Sony has mentioned that the PS3 will do more than just games, but that's about it. But as insignificant as that sounds, it does hint that Sony intends to make the PS3 more of a multimedia box rather than a straight game console. That alone should give you an idea of what to expect in the next PS. Personally; we just want true VGA output..._X_X_X_X_X_[small]PS2 v7, DVR-AO5U, Magic 3.1, Nero, Ritek

Thanks for the postings all. Something that not only I am interested in, but really more so my wonderful 13-yr old, who has been speculating wildly about what it is going to look like, as well as the talked-about new functionality (I do hope it will allow for gamers to at least play PS2 games).

    Thanks again all!
