Well that's very bad news.. I suppose you tried following this guide..

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=316047

Now a no default root fs found is a really bad error.. I have seen it once or twice and couldn't do anything about it but reinstall. But that was on a pc. I read through that guide and even as an experienced linux user I wouldn't attempt it.. too much chance of a typo or missing a step or some random bug because ubuntu is updated all the time.. There was a major debian sid kernel update a few days ago, and ubuntu is built on sid. (and we all think ubuntu is crap as well!)

I think you may be on your own.. Why not try the ubuntu forums and see if one of the ps3 experts there can give you one or two easy steps to try. I'm not going to suggest anything because messing by guesswork can make things much worse.
