It's called a firmware update. Some burners can do this. I have a TDK840G 8x Burner, with my current firmware I can burn some 4x media at 8x.

But when I'm backing up dvd's I control my burns, and burn at 4x or 2.4x

are there advantages in controlling the burn speed at 4x or 2.4x ? or on the other hand, are there disadvantages in burning at 8x's ?

The advantage of burning at 8X is that you save a few minutes and the disadvantages are that you can reduce compatibiblity and you increase the chances for errors.

Regular and hacked firmwares can be gound here http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php
