I have tried using Bittorrent, but after downloading it and spending 15 minutes playing with it I couldn't figure it out and just gave up.

But after reading the following article on the BBC's website I thought I should give it another go.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/2940270.stm

The article states that using Bittorrent you can download a high quality version of Matrix "DOWN"loaded in just three hours.

(I thought the BBC didn't advertise - this is the best advertising I have seen in a long time)

The Bittorrent website is not that easy to follow.

Can anybody help me get up and running with this?

BT is different -- it is not essentially exactly a P2P network in normal sense, you can't search anything and you can't see the BT client at all unless you're downloading. You need to find .torrent file somewhere from the Net for the file you want to download and click it and BT kicks in and starts downloading it. So, in theory, it is just a download assistant (using P2P model for distributing the download sources), not a search tool.

Okay lets tkae this 1 step at a time.

I have downloaded BitTorrent V3.2 and the read me file states

BitTorrent is a tool for distributing files. It's extremely
easy to use - downloads are started by clicking on hyperlinks.
Whenever more than one person is downloading at once
they send pieces of the file(s) to each other, thus relieving
the central server's bandwidth burden. Even with many
simultaneous downloads, the upload burden on the central server
remains quite small, since each new downloader introduces new
    upload capacity.

Windows web browser support is added by running an installer.
A prebuilt one is available, but instructions for building it
    yourself are in BUILD.windows.txt

    Okay so far (I think).

It states "Windows web browser support is added by running an installer." Well how do I do run an installer?

I have tried going to 'BUILD.windows.txt' file but it is even more confusing.

install Python, version 2.0 or later - http://python.org/

    install wxPython - http://wxpython.org/

    install py2exe - http://starship.python.net/crew/theller/py2exe/

install the nullsoft installer - http://www.nullsoft.com/free/nsis/

in a shell, go to the root BitTorrent directory and run this command

    python winsetup.py py2exe --windows

change to the newly created subdirectory dist\btdownloadprefetched,
copy bittorrent.nsi into that directory, and run nsis on it.

    cd dist\btdownloadgui
    copy ..\..\bittorrent.nsi bittorrent.nsi
    c:\progra~1\nsis\makensis.exe bittorrent.nsi

This will create an installer called bittorrent.exe

The installer is completely self-contained and will work on any
Windows machine, even without the above software having been
    installed.{/i]

Now I know why I gave up the first time I tried.

I installed it okay. But don't know what to do next?

    *sigh*

...means you can skip _ALL_ your steps, download installer and install it just like any other Windows software. Latest and official one is:

http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html .. the text "we have windows installer" is kinda self-explaining.

There is and I don't appreciate the context of the question, but the question of "how in the heck bittorrent works" itself is worth answering anyway.
