memory shortage

    im sry in advance is this was posted anywere else and answered i looked everywhere and didnt find anything about this problem. my neighbor is having a problem with alot of memory loss he missing about half of his memory he is running 512mb of memory but hes only has 230mb left of ram. anyone with information about this would be greatly appreciated thanx

    if it also helps he has a HP pavilion 780n any info will be great thanx again

    check to see if he has onboard video & if does check bios settings to see what is assigned to the onboard video. also see how many sticks of ram he has, if 2 pull 1 out at a time to see what the memory count is

    if hes running one stick of RAM make sure it is the correct speed (e.g. pc 100, 133, 3200 etc...) because if hes running a higher speed than he should, it will only read it as if hes running half that.

    for example 512MB of pc133 RAM in a PC100 will only read the memory stick as 256MB

    jaydeeX3, your statement is wrong as pc133 512meg will read as pc100 512meg. depends on whether ram is single density or double density will you lose half of ram

    we got it up to 430mb ram I did alot of different tests and took the pc apart and did alot of differnt stuff and its goin good now

    so what happened with the rest of missing ram of 82megs

    i have no idea he has a 64mb gfx card but other than that i dont know where the rest went we both also think his windows xp is messed up so hes getting a new windows xp program

    try that ram on another computer to see if posts right or not. how many sticks does he have??

    either 1 of the sticks is bad or socket is or he also has onboard video but 82meg is not a usual # for video

    ok well ill try to put it in diff pc because mines acting up i only have 194 avaiable and i have two sticks of 256mb so i am gona do some tests on mine as well and see whats up with things

    try 1 stick at a time in each socket. is it windows reporting that # or the bios??
