Everything You Need to Know About Refreshing and Resetting Your Windows 8 or 10 PC
Windows users regularly reinstall Windows (or restore from a recovery partition) to fix system problems. Windows 8 or 10 include easier-to-use “Refresh” and “Reset” options that quickly restore Windows to a fresh, factory default configuration.
Just as mobile devices have an integrated “reset to factory defaults” option, so does Windows 8 or 10. You can even create your own refresh image or access these options if your computer can’t boot.

How to clean install Windows 10 directly without upgrade

By Martin Brinkmann on August 30, 2015 in Windows - Last Update: August 30, 2015 6

The official way to upgrade an existing computer system to Windows 10 is to upgrade it while it is still installed on the computer.
Some users prefer to do a clean install instead which, according to Microsoft, does not work directly if you have upgrade media (for instance by using the free in first year offer)
Clean installs are useful if you want to start anew, or if you don't have access to the old operating system anymore.
If you follow Microsoft's instructions, you would have to install the old operating system first before running the upgrade. To get a clean install, you'd have to install Windows 10 anew after that upgrade process.
A user on Reddit discovered a method that improves that process significantly. Basically, it enables you to clean install Windows 10 directly provided that you still have access to the previous version of Windows.

Tip: Before you run this operation, make sure to backup the existing Windows installation so that you can restore it should things go wrong.

How, When, and Why to Set a Connection as Metered on Windows 10

Windows 10 is designed for PCs with unlimited Internet connections, and it normally uses as much of your download and upload bandwidth as it wants without asking. Setting a connection as metered puts you back in control, and it’s essential on some types of connections.

You’ll always want to do this on connections with data caps, mobile hotspots, satellite Internet connections, dial-up connections, and anything else. It gives you more control over your connection and prevents Windows from gobbling bandwidth.

What Setting a Connection as Metered Does
Setting a connection as metered prevents Windows from automatically using bandwidth in many ways. Here’s exactly what it does:

    • Disables automatic downloading of Windows updates: Windows won’t automatically download updates from Windows Update on metered Internet connections. You’ll get a “Download” button you can click whenever you want to install updates.
    • Disables automatic downloading of app updates: The Windows Store won’t automatically download updates for your installed “Store apps” on metered connections, either. Desktop apps like Chrome, Firefox, and others will continue updating themselves normally.
    • Disables peer-to-peer uploading of updates: On a metered connection, Windows 10 won’t use your upload bandwidth to share updates with PCs over the Internet. Windows 10 does this by default, consuming your potentially limited upload allowance to reduce Microsoft’s bandwidth bills.
    • Tiles may not update: Microsoft says that the live tiles on your Start menu or Start screen “may” stop updating on a metered connection.
    • Other apps may behave differently: Apps — particularly apps from the Windows Store — could potentially read this setting and behave differently. For example, a “universal app” BitTorrent client could potentially stop downloading automatically when connected to a metered connection.

Stop Windows 10's keylogger from monitoring what you type, ink, and say

The 'keylogger' that's built into Windows 10 has gained something of a bad reputation -- but it's really a bit of a misnomer. Yes, there is a component that -- technically speaking -- tracks what you input using the keyboard, screen, mouse, voice, and stylus... but it's a bit more complicated than that. It is not really a keylogger in the sense that the malware term usually implies.

How to stop Windows 10 downloading automatically

Once again, Microsoft has managed to rile people with Windows 10. People have discovered that the Windows 10 installation files are being downloaded to their computers without their permission. If this has happened to you already, we've already shown you how to remove Windows 10, claiming back space and regaining control.

But if you have been lucky enough to avoid the unwanted arrival of Windows 10 installation files so far, you'll be more interested in prevention than a cure. Here's what you need to do to make sure Microsoft doesn’t force feed you Windows 10.

How to delete Microsoft’s unwanted Windows 10 download files

Yesterday, we discussed how Microsoft now downloads Windows 10 to local devices whether users have chosen to do so or not. Here, we’ll walk you through the process of reclaiming that space. The surest way to tell if you’ve been affected by the stealth download is to navigate to your C:\Windows directory. Once there, you’ll want to configure Explorer to show hidden files and folders.

In Windows 7, you do this by clicking on “Tools,” then “Folder Options,” and finally “Show Hidden Files and Folders,” as shown below. In Windows 8/8.1, click on the View tab and then select the “Hidden items” check box.

Once this is done, check your Windows directory for a directory named $WINDOWS.~BT. The icon may be translucent, since the folder is normally hidden, so check carefully. You can delete this folder if you wish, but doing so won’t actually prevent Microsoft from downloading the setup program again. Once the OS has decided that you’re going to install Windows 10, it’s downright pushy about having the data locally. The only solution, according to various sources, is to actually remove a specific Windows Update: KB3035583.

KB3035583 is described by Microsoft as installing “the Get Windows 10 app, which helps users understand their Windows 10 upgrade options and device readiness.” It can be uninstalled by navigating to Windows Update from within the Control Panel, choosing “Programs and Features,” and then selecting the “View Installed Updates” option. Remove this update and then delete the folder, and you’ll reclaim your lost disk space.

KB 3035583 can then be blocked from installing again by hiding the update from within the Windows Update setting in Control Panel.

    An uncertain situation

    MICROSOFT - front-door- backdoors

NATO gets a front-door to look for Microsoft backdoors

Microsoft has renewed its 12-year-old agreement with NATO which, among other things, lets the organisation check for bugs, vulnerabilities, and backdoors in Redmond's products.

The company announced the agreement here.

The essence of the release is that NATO's Communications and Information Agency, NCI, has signed with Microsoft's Government Security Program (GSP).

Under the GSP, Redmond will provide vulnerability and threat intelligence information to the NCI, including "controlled access to source code" for its core enterprise products.

Products covered by the GSP include Windows (currently up to 8.1), Windows Server up to 2012 R2, Office 2007, 2010, and 2013, Lync 2013, Sharepoint 2010, and versions 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 of Windows Embedded CE.

NATO's renewal brings to 44 the number of governments worldwide that have joined the GSP, Microsoft says.

The program is supported by a Transparency Center in Brussels that opened in June 2015, where signatory governments can look at source code covered by the GSP, as well as reviewing Azure and Office 365 cloud products

Fix Windows 10 problems with these troubleshooting tools from Microsoft

Upgrading to Windows 10 from either Windows 7 or 8.1 should go smoothly and be relatively painless afterwards, but we know from the enduring popularity of features such as How to fix Windows 10's worst problems that it often isn’t the case.

Microsoft also knows that upgraders are encountering all sorts of issues with the new OS, and so has put together a selection of automated troubleshooters designed to fix problems you might be having post-upgrade.

Not every problem is addressed of course (there are simply too many possible issues to tackle them all), but the tech giant is targeting some of the more common woes.

Worried about Windows 10 privacy? Use Linux

Windows 10 is a wonderful operating system. Every day, I boot a computer running Microsoft's latest operating system to get work done. On the surface, everything is peachy-keen. Sadly, under the hood, there are some legitimate privacy concerns. There is a bunch of information being sent to Microsoft, and you may not even know it. This has caused programs like the wonderful O&O ShutUp10 to be created.
    http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/OO-ShutUp10/1439996829/1

Luckily, Windows is not the only game in town, folks. Actually, there are many wonderful operating systems available to you at no charge. Unlike Windows 10, where it is only free with a prior licence, most Linux-based operating systems are entirely free. Period. If you want to try one of these open-source operating systems, you may be confused as to where to start. Don't worry, I am here to help. Here are the distributions and software you should use.

How to Make Old Programs Work on Windows 10

Most of your Windows applications should just work on Windows 10. If they worked on Windows 7, they’ll almost certainly work on Windows 10. Some older PC applications won’t just work, but there are many ways to get them working again.

These tricks cover a variety of applications, from Windows XP-era applications and old PC games that require outdated DRM to DOS and Windows 3.1 applications.

    Run as Administrator
Many applications developed for Windows XP will work properly on a modern version of Windows, except for one little issue. During the Windows XP era, average Windows users typically used their PC as an Administrator account all the time. Applications were coded to just assume they had Administrator access and will fail if they didn’t. UAC fixed this, and there were some teething problems at first.

If an older application isn’t working properly, try right-clicking its shortcut or .exe file and select “Run as Administrator” to launch it with those permissions. If it requires administrator access, you can set it to always run as administrator with the compatibility settings below.

    Compatibility Settings

Windows includes compatibility settings that can make old applications functional. To access these, right-click an application’s shortcut or .exe file and select Properties. In Windows 10’s Start menu, right-click a shortcut, select “Open file location”, and then right-click the shortcut and select “Properties”. Click over the Compatibility tab. You can click the “Use the compatibility troubleshooter” button for a wizard interface or just adjust the options yourself.

For example, if an application doesn’t run properly on Windows 10 but did run properly on Windows XP. click the “Run this program in compatibility mode” for checkbox and select “Windows XP (Service Pack 3)”.

Try a variety of other settings, too. For example, very old games may benefit from “Reduced color mode”. On high DPI displays, you may have to check the “Disable display scaling on high DPI settings” to make a program look normal.

How to Disable & Replace OneDrive in Windows 10

One of the things that really bugs people about Microsoft is their penchant for installing software on their PCs that not everybody wants. OneDrive in Windows 10 and 8 is a good example.
If you were to ask Microsoft, they would say that removing OneDrive is impossible. It’s seemingly attached to Windows 10 like a pair of over-protective Siamese twins, but many people have since proven that to be totally untrue. You CAN remove it if you want to, and a lot of people do want to, as bugs have been found which stop them from accessing their folders, as well as the whole smart files saga. You can also remove it if you have chosen to remain with Windows 8.1 for the moment.

Microsoft stresses that Windows 10 does not breach your privacy

Microsoft has come under quite a lot of fire recently due to privacy concerns from numerous users as well as erroneous reporting from a few news outlets. Even Microsoft updating its Services Agreement terms to stop people from playing counterfeit games on their devices such as the Xbox, has been a victim of these misleading reports which aggravated the situation so much that 'hardcore' pirates banned Windows 10 users over privacy fears. To address these concerns, Microsoft's Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group Terry Myerson has offered a bit of insight and clarification on privacy and Windows 10.
