Can someone tell me the best way to compress an MKV with subtitles thats about 290MB into an AVI or MP4 around 190MB? Ive tried Format Factory, but i either loose a LOT of quality, or the file size ends up being larger than the original MKV.
Orinal MKVs are around 1280x720 (which I'd like to keep if possible.

You could change the softwares "bit-rate" settings.
Many video converters could calculate the bitrate based the target size.
I used Full Video Converte Free, It could review the target size.
and under the "Tools" menu, You could find Bitrate calculate.
You could get right bitrate by Bitrate calculate

You could try Full Video Converter.
    Handbrake is ok yet.

    Try this video converter.
    resource: video-converter-on-mac.com
In order to get a smaller video file, you should reset the bit-rate before converting.

you probably should take a look at the bitrate, like everyone else said but as a general rule, the higher the bitrate, the better the quality will be. if youre looking for a good video converter though, try audials moviebox or audials one. i know moviebox only has video formats and audials one does audio converting as well. anywho, some step by step instructions on how to convert mkv to mp4 you can find here: audials.com/en/s/converter_conversion/video/convert_mkv_to_mp4.html
