Read the glossary to know more about the MPEG-4 format. VirtualDub-MPEG2 (a VirtualDub modification) allows you to compress in MPEG-4 (Xivx or latest DivX; maybe also the Xvid codec, which is freeware, is valid?) any MPEG-2 movie, provided you have the proper codec installed on your PC.
Alas, I never deal with compressed movies, maybe you can find other applications which make MPEG-4 movies better (VirtualDub has the big mistrake to be unable 'by default' to compress the audio stream, for many mpeg-input movies, unless you set an audio compression. You risk to produce a 1 GB movie whose size is due 50% to video stream (correct) and 50% to an uncompressed audio stream (absurd).
Prorobably, in http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/ (expecially in http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2divx.cfm ,http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2divx_anamorphic.cfm and http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/copy_dvd_to_xvid.cfm ) you can find some guides which teach you how to set a compression of the sound with VirtualDub.
