I just got an external NEC ND-3500A dvd burner. I bought a spindle of 50 fujifilm DVD-R's. I tried backing up a dvd movie using Nero, CopytoDvd, and cloneDVD, and all of them just give me an error and wont burn. I've wasting so many DVD-R's. I have no idea what to do now. I even downloaded a firmware upgrade and DMA is enabled.

If you want to fix an error you first have to know what that error is.

If you don't want to waste R's while you are fixing your error, then it would seem like a good idea to use RW's instead.

One thing I can tell you to check without knowing your error, check to see if you have USB 1 or USB 2. External burners won't work off USB 1. Not fast enough data transfer.
